What SABS Approved Material Means

In September 1945, the South African Bureau of Standards (SABS) was established. At the time, the major powers’ extensive post-war reconstruction effort was under way with a growing understanding of the necessity to produce goods in accordance with a shared and accepted set of standards. By providing objective criteria to ensure minimum product safety and performance integrity and by enhancing applicability across a range of national markets, standardization facilitated and strengthened international trade.

The SABS mark is a procedure for attesting that a given product has successfully undergone performance and quality assurance tests and satisfies the qualification requirements outlined in a standard, specification or regulation. Typically, certified products are marked with certification from the certifying authority.

The SABS still plays a crucial role today, 75 years later. Unquestionably important to the growth and welfare of our country are standards and the procedures used to determine compliance with standards. It is crucial to South Africa’s technological infrastructure, whether for business and industry, public health and safety, or the country’s economic performance.

Standards are prevalent and continue to be crucial to the economy by:

  • enabling business interaction
  • aiding companies to comply with relevant laws and regulations
  • accelerate the introduction of innovative products to market
  • enhancing compatibility between new and existing products, services and processes.

The gap between research and the end market is filled through standardization. The transfer of research findings to the national and worldwide market is facilitated by standards. To ensure that the quality is consistent, a new standard or an adjustment to an existing standard must be made each time an innovation is turned into a product or system. The purpose of product or system certification is to guarantee quality assurance.
