When you’re choosing treated pine for a project, CCA and Vacsol describe two different preservation processes, not two grades of the same thing. Picking the wrong one affects how the timber looks once it’s installed, how it takes paint or stain, and what you pay. Here’s how the two actually differ.
What Is CCA Treatment?
CCA stands for chromated copper arsenate, a water-borne preservative that’s pressure-injected into the timber so it penetrates the cell structure rather than sitting on the surface.
The copper compound in the solution reacts with the wood and fixes permanently, which is what gives CCA-treated pine its familiar green tint. It’s a well-established, cost-effective process, and it’s the standard behind our CCA H2 pine range. What Is Vacsol Treatment?
Vacsol is a light organic solvent preservative. Instead of a water carrier, the preservative is dissolved in a light solvent that evaporates after treatment, so the timber doesn’t absorb the same volume of liquid CCA does. That means less swelling, less grain raising, and a shorter drying window before the timber is ready to work with.
It’s the process behind our Vacsol-treated pine range, and it’s positioned as the premium option for projects where appearance and finish quality matter more than cost.

Why CCA Goes Green and Vacsol Doesn’t
The colour difference comes straight from the chemistry. CCA’s copper component leaves the characteristic green-grey cast, which fades a little over time but never fully disappears. Vacsol’s organic solvent carrier doesn’t contain the same colourants, so treated timber stays close to its natural pale pine tone.
That’s why Vacsol pine is the better starting point for furniture, shelving, and anything staying visible indoors, while CCA’s tint is rarely an issue once the timber is painted or hidden inside a structure.

Is the Vacsol Premium Worth Paying?
Vacsol timber costs more than CCA H2 in the equivalent size, and the gap is noticeable enough to plan for in a materials budget. Whether it’s worth paying comes down to what the timber will be used for.
For structural framing, fencing, or anything that will be painted, clad, or buried below ground, CCA H2 does the job at a lower cost with no visible downside. For furniture, feature shelving, or any surface that will be oiled, waxed, or left natural, the Vacsol premium buys a cleaner finish and a timber that behaves more predictably once it’s cut and sanded.
On a mixed project, such as a deck with a framed substructure and a visible top layer, it’s common to combine both: CCA underneath for the hidden bracing, and Vacsol on anything that stays on show.
Painting, Staining and Finishing
CCA’s green pigment and higher moisture content can bleed through light paint colours if the timber isn’t fully dry before coating, and its tannins occasionally cause blotching under clear stains. Vacsol’s lower moisture uptake and neutral colour make it more forgiving for stains, oils, and varnishes, since there’s no green base tone working against the finish.

As a general guide, allow both treatments to dry fully before applying any finish; rushing this step is the most common cause of poor paint adhesion and patchy staining on treated pine, regardless of which process was used.
Choosing Between CCA and Vacsol for Your Project
As a rule of thumb: reach for CCA H2 on structural, exterior, or hidden applications where cost matters more than colour, and reach for Vacsol wherever the timber will be visible, handled, or finished with anything other than paint.
Both processes meet the same South African pine timber standards, so the decision comes down to appearance, budget, and how the timber will be used, not durability.
