06 Apr Decking Application Notes
19×90 Decking Tips
Substructure should be raised off the ground and must be treated. Noggins should be used to keep the stringers square and rigid while gum poles can be used to help carry weight and prevent the deck from been springy.
We suggest using a 4 to 5mm gap between slats for 90mm planks and 8 to 10mm gaps for the wider 140mm plank (there will be some expansion & contraction depending on the season).
Proper spacers should be used not only to ensure constancy of the gaps used but also to pull the planks perfectly straight.
There must be at least 2 stainless steel screws per fixing onto substructure at 450 spacing’s. For 90mm wide planks, the screws can be 10 to 15mm in from the edge, while with the wider 140mm plank between 15mm and 25mm.
The holes for the screws should be predrilled (otherwise decking ends will split), and the screws should be counter sunk.
The stainless steel screw should be ideally a 5×60 but 5×50’s are used too.
We suggest all decking; especially Garapa (cement stains Garapa) should be regarded as a finishing product so do not install it if paint or any other labor work is still to be done in the area.
Please contact us regarding any further queries on application or the timber itself BEFORE putting the deck down. It’s easy to take the material back for a refund if it’s not installed but not possible if it’s installed.

Some decking notes regarding 19×140 Garapa
* We suggest using at least a 6mm gap between slats for 140mm planks for Garapa (there could be some expansion when wet)
* There should be at least 2 stainless steel screws per fixing onto substructure at 450 spacing’s
* The holes for the screws should be predrilled
* The stainless steel screws fixing should be approx 12mm from edge of the plank to the center
* The stainless steel screw should be ideally a 5×60 but 5×50’s are used too

Oiling of a deck
There are varying schools of thought when it comes to oiling a deck. Some purists believe in leaving a deck to follow its natural ageing process
We recommend oiling all 4 sides of your deck with clear oil (such as Loba Deck & Teak Oil – Transparent) before installation to help it acclimatize. This should also minimize surface cracking from the initial burn from the sun. Thereafter it can be left to age to its natural state.
We also recommend oiling a very small section first to test the reaction of the deck before oiling the whole deck. Also make sure the deck is clean and dry before oiling.
